What is the difference between open and close Rhinoplasty?

29 Aug 2019 By Admin

Rhinoplasty is a procedure by which the size, shape or proportions of the nose can be changed. It is also done to repair deformities caused by an injury or to correct birth defects or improve some breathing difficulties. Rhinoplasty is performed under general anesthesia. The requirement of open and closed rhinoplasty depends on the situation and expectation from rhinoplasty. To get effective results from rhinoplasty one must consult a doctor. Open and closed rhinoplasty are the surgical procedures to correct nasal asymmetry and  enhance the nasal proportions.

Open Rhinoplasty
Open rhinoplasty is used to treat the nasal tip and the middle part of the nose. This involves the use of small bridging incision. This incision helps to link right and left nostrils. The bridging incision allows the skin to be folded upward to provide full access to the lower nasal skeleton. Open rhinoplasty is also known as external rhinoplasty. The main benefit of open technique is improved accuracy for reshaping the framework and for gaining the desired contours. The scars which are left behind with open rhinoplasty are well hidden in the nasal contours, and fade away with time.

Closed Rhinoplasty
In closed rhinoplasty, the incisions are hidden inside the patient’s nose. The modifications in closed rhinoplasty are performed inside the nostrils. This surgery is generally performed for people who require minor adjustments in the nasal structure, bridge and some desired modifications. Closed rhinoplasty is known as endonasal rhinoplasty. The best thing about this rhinoplasty is that there are no visible scars.

Which is Better?

Rhinoplasty improves the shape of the nose, and is the most common cosmetic procedure performed all over the world.

Often people come across situations where they are unable to choose the right procedure . Though open rhinoplasty and closed rhinoplasty are different, one is not superior to the other. Dr. Mrinalini Sharma, an experienced and skilled plastic surgeon can help to decide the best procedure suited, according to the individual’s nasal concerns and needs.

It is very obvious that the patients must share their expectations with the surgeon, to achieve the desired results.

Why One Should Consider Rhinoplasty?

Generally, we come across people who are not happy with the size of the nose. Some people have too large or too small a nose, and rhinoplasty is the procedure, that can help them to get the desired shape of the nose. Other than this some people who have problems in breathing can also consider septoplasty along with rhinoplasty. Some people feel that their nose is bumpy or the tip is too bulky and  lack a defined shape can get rhinoplasty done, to achieve the desired nasal shape.

Rhinoplasty procedure takes about  2-3 hours. After this surgery the patient is advised to wear a nasal support and gauze for the first 7-10 days after the surgery.

Side effects like swelling and bruising may occur that can last for a few days after the surgery. To get over this one has to use ice or cold compresses three to four times a day, as directed by the surgeon. The results of rhinoplasty will be visible after the swelling goes down and bruises subside.

The results of rhinoplasty are natural-looking and permanent. Sometimes, it may take a year for the new nasal contours to refine fully.
